Maybe 5mm of preload. Remember that the more you use, the harder it is to get the cap back on.

It's still a big bodge, just fit some proper springs!

(or some forks that work properly)

My forks work, I've got hagon progressives fitted but just read about them not being effective without a bit of preload adjustment. So figured a few pence might improve the suspension. I've got some spare caps of some old forks could just shim them up to somewhere near 5mil.

Have you actually measured sag or travel used by braking?

Yeap, go forth and try it when you've got some working brakes.

read my mind . Brakelines should be fitted tomorrow along with new pads so going for a big night timeride to check and bed in the pads. With the cable tie thing do you just fit cable ties above the dust sealy things on the forks then go for a ride and see how far they get pushed up?

Yes, that's a good way to measure total travel

Yeah fit them there, take the fork tops off with bike supported and see how close to the yoke the seal ends up at fully bottomed out. Reassemble. Fit cable tie.

Go and brake hard on a smooth ish road, you want to have 10mm of travel remaining under hard braking on smooth surface.

And do I brake front only or both?
