Normally would read a book if I couldn't sleep bt hasn't worked!

The shifts may have something to do with it but don't understand why it has just started.

EDIT: Magnum, can't do that, being a musician it stimualtes my mind and then I can't nod off.

There must be something on your mind, perhaps something you might not be abe to think about straight away? Anxiety can really keep you up.

OK, this might not work tonight as you might not have the books to do it with. But try reading (in bed, but doesn't have to be - so long as you're comfy & warm). If you finish reading the book you start, read another. Finish that one, read another. etc etc.

Your body will only go so long before it physically can't stay awake. Granted it could be difficult if you have to be in work, so maybe try this when you've got the next day off, so there's no pressure about "I have to get to sleep by X am, or I'll be late for work" etc.

I might try that tomorrow night. Could really do with some sleep tonight though!

I think that's partly what's causing your lack of sleep. Stress. Mainly stress about not sleeping.

One of those vicious circle things. It's easier said than done, I know, but you really need to put the "not sleeping" issue out of your mind.

If you're lucky, and I'm right, you'll lay in bed tomorrow night with a couple of decent books, get half way through the first one & wake up in the morning wondering how the hell you managed to get to sleep in the first place!!

I have a fair amount of experience sorting my sleep patterns out due to silly shifts at work. I'm at work now for example...

That's what happened when I couldn't sleep. Every night I was expecting to not sleep, so when I lay down, instead of relaxing and letting my mind drift off, all I was thinking about was not sleeping, and what to do instead. You've got to break the cycle. Getting really drunk is one way to guarantee sleep for me.

Alcohol generally ensures I wake up early though. Excessive alcohol means broken sleep because I'm up using the toilet, either for the reason it was intended or for other waste disposal.

Drink about 1/2 a bottle of Nyquil and lie in bed and watch something boring on TV. You will go to sleep.
(don't plan on having to wake up for the next 8 hrs. or so)

I find watching the same DVD over and over again really works. I've been using the same DVD since 2007 and I can't fall asleep pretty quickly without it, (even though I have sleep issues which are still there). The familiar sound in the background may help you as well.

As a broad stroke, clear your mind and shut your eyes. That's what normally lets you sleep. If you're thinking about things it'll keep you up.
