Never said there was anything wrong with them But they are usually considerably cheaper than other brands. Think I've had one of my pairs around four years, the only thing I can say is they aren't as warm as they used to be, but I only use them for tramping to and from school and walking the dogs these days.
If I'm going out for ages I use the other pair.

Berghaus for me, mine are 11 year old leather jobs which take walking type crampons (not stiff enough for climbing type), they're great but only get used from time to time.

I love my crampons, have used them for Ice Climbing, trekking on Ice and even walking to work during the recent winter snow when the pavements froze and lots of folks were falling over.

A boot stiff enough for a walking crampon will provide good support and protect the foot from the ground a little better than a softer boot. However, stiff boots can feel a little unwieldy at first. I would go every where in my Ice boots if I could because of the comfort and support they offer. However with thermal linings and High tops, they bake my feet in about twenty minutes in the summer.

I bought a pair of full leather Hi-Tecs for Carol about 18 months ago and she loves them. I do make sure that they are properly waxed though. Boot polish and then Nikwax to protect the leather, however I do this to all of my boots. If you can bare the look, don't polish off the Nikwax, it protects the boot better that way.

For those of us that like a gentle stroll rather than the serious stuff then the likes of Hi Tech and Peter Storm are plenty. I've spent a lot on Berghaus boots before now but never used them for more than lowland walks, which is a false economy.

Just remember to get good socks. I've discovered the advantages of these only recently and wish I'd done so years ago.

I haven't had a pair of walking boots of any make (or price) that haven't fallen apart within a couple of years.

For cheap bike boots that can double as walking boots, these aren't bad:

For serious walking, I'd probably go for Berghaus. Altbergs have a very good reputation. I've never owned any but would love to have some of their bike boots.

I like my Karrimors. First boots I've had which are actually comfortable. 3 days of heaving walking in the Lake District and I didn't get one sore or blister.

Great boots but they really don't compare to the proper walking boots for simple reason they are not breathable and you sweat.

Hi-Tec Altitudes for me too. For the price, they are a great boot.

I have a pair of these when I'm out with the kids on walking days.
Nice and light and good value for money (had mine about 6 years now and still going strong) I'm also a fan of their magnum range for detachment nights in the summer too
i also have a pair of magnum patrol boots that i wear for walking , hi leg so plenty of ankle support , i think a lot is down to what boots u are used to i've always worn army style boots although the modern walkin boots are far superior
