Ralph there are plenty of nice villages North of Northampton. Might be worth heading over one time and just having a pootle round to see where they are and what they are like.
I'd suggest avoiding any villages where the obvious commute would be up the A43, dangerous road and it gets really busy...although there are a vast amount of good country roads meaning you can always avoid the A43. I used to commute to Kettering from Northampton and would travel up the A45 to Wellingborough then up to Kettering as in the mornings it was quicker and safer, used to take me 20-25 mins. I was looking at viiages North of Northampton before I chose where I live now and it is definately somewhere I'd choose to live possibly in the future.
