I agree, if it has a tilt/movement sensor then it should be mounted securely to the bike. Indeed, I`d prefer to bolt it properly to something solid.

As YC said, most are fixed to the subframe, I suppose it's really down to available space.....especially if you're going to refit your Scottoiler. Once I empty the oil out its to go back to Scottoiler to get repaired or replaced, but even then I might not bother with it.

As to whether or not to have an alarm, I personally have had no trouble with the ones I've had fitted to my bikes past and present.
The benefits to having one should outway the negatives.....
  • cheaper insurance
  • peace of mind
  • theft deterant
With regard to nasty ******* bike thieves, well, anything to make their lives even a little bit harder is definitely worth it IMO. Correct.

Of all alarms, Meta are the lesser of the evils, but even they go wrong at frequent enough intervals for me not to bother with them.

I've bought and run quite a few bikes with alarms, I'd say 50% of them gave trouble in the first 6 months and all of them had the alarm removed within the first year. I had an R1 in at the shop with a faulty Meta 357 the other week - it's his third alarm in 6 years of owning the bike. The main unit has gone pop, 2 months out of the warranty. Naturally, when the alarm goes wrong the immobiliser kicks in and the bike can't be started, so that wrecked his planned weekend away with his mates because it went pop at his first fuel stop 20 miles from home.

Just my experiences, but obviously if your's are positive then fill yer boots. Personally I wouldn't have one anywhere near my bike and if I buy a used bike with one fitted it's the first thing that gets removed, followed by wheel stripes and red/blue anodised bling.

Surely the location of the alarm and how its fixed to the bike plays a big part in how reliable it will be though ? If you loosely tie strap it to the frame then the vibrations will affect the electronics, but fitted with sticky foam pads to the plastics away from the engine will help.

Makes no odds how you do it in my experience. I've seen very neatly and professionally installed ones fail for no good reason, and others that have been lobbed in last just as long.

I've had Laserline alarms fitted by the same dealer to all my bikes, NEVER had issues.

Miss_Undaztood, how soon are you planning to fit yours?

Once my back is better, if I can physically get the bike out at the weekend, I'm happy to try and get some photo's of where my alarm is mounted!?

Have you got room near the pillion seat latch?

Mine is all mounted under the RHS tail section, against the sub-frame, if I can help with photo's, I will.
