Seems you are right Tim, I thought this had been rectified in the Flood & Water Management Act 2010 under which these bans are now drawn, but the wording is typically rubbish

Although the use of a hosepipe under the Flood & Water Management Act 2010 from a private supply needs to be tested in court...

If the utility company thought about it it could only apply to water from the mains though

Yes you can fill your watering can from a hosepipe, UU have said as much.

i have 3 watering cans and fill one.. from hosepipe.. as I am using it hospeipe is filling another etc etc on a rota so hosepipe is as constant as if I was watering garden witrh it.. crazy !.. but I likes my garden so must keep it watered.

** agree with tim.. it bucketed down here for about 5 hours yesterday ..

mind you my hanging baskets still need water.

A point of interest.. IF YOU ARE A BLUE BADGE HOLDER.. YOU ARE EXEMPT FROM THE BAN.. thats fact so if you have parents or yourself who cant lift a watering can etc and have blue badge- hose away .. within reason of course.

my mums next door neighbour uses mums cos my mum a blue badge holder to fill her water butt cos they "share" it.. mum aint on a water meter..

Tim obviously you are not banned from using a hosepipe, just from using one connected to the mains supply. Pumping out from your 'own supply' in the basement is specifically not covered!

It does not 'always rain' or else the rivers would not be as low as they are. Take your heads out your arses and look over a few bridge parapets, see the wide empty rocky thing below? That's meant to be full of water. We have a draught people, it has not rained the 'normal' amount all year.

As has been already alluded to, short bursts of heavy rain are no good for filling rivers and reservoirs, you need days and weeks of steady rain that soaks the ground and gives a constant supply to watercourses.

The northern half of England depends very much on reservoirs. Many of these are at less than 50% of their normal stocks for the time of year. Therefore steps are needed to reduce water consumption. It's that simple. Hosepipes are very wasteful, how many folks do you see washing the car and leaving the hose running, with expensive treated drinking water being poured down the drain or watering their lawns for hours on end? People are profligate with a scarce resource because it's just there in the tap.

And whoever said there has been no dam building since the 50s, stop talking ****!

And whoever said that the population has outstripped water resources built this century, stop talking ****!

you mean drought Mike if you have a draught shut the door.. touche.

Can you provide more info on the blue badge exemption as the wife has one for her parking etc. Is that the badge you mean. I could understand it if it was the badge holder washing car, watering gardens etc. but not other family members.

Watering and cleaning animals and animal areas (ie: yards and stables)Topping up a pond
Please note: blue badge holders and customers who are registered disabled are exempt from the ban.
Although the ban only prevents the use of a hosepipe or sprinkler to water your garden or wash your car, we would ask our customers to consider

I hate all this talk of hosepipe bans. Only because most people moan on and on about not being able to use a hose to water the garden etc or, as has happened in this thread, blame it on the system and leaks that aren't getting fixed and so on. Yes, more could be done to protect the water we have, but that responsibility can't lay solely with the government or the water boards. We have to start using less water at home and if we all did that, it would have a far greater impact than anything the government/water boards can do.

It's rained here a fair bit the last couple of days, pretty much the whole time and not too heavy, but after such a long dry spell, it is still running off. There's nothing any of us can do about that.

We can only change the things we control, so just use less water in any way you can. We're not getting anywhere near the amount of rain through the winter and spring months that we usually do. April is apparently famous for showers, but the last few years, we get heat waves in April. It's just changing, so we need to change with it.
