Mac's hold a resale value! Yes they may cost more than the equivalent spec'd PC, but in 1-2 years time, you can still sell it for half decent money whereas the pc is worthless. |

Had my iMac for about 6 months, Mrs Jabba has MacBook for about the same time.
So much nicer, more logical, less software maintenance, less hassle. I ain't ever going back to a PC. |

Oh yeah, thats iDiots selling to wannabe iDiots... Its not even as if you have the "strange and exotic" hardware card to play that the PPC architecture is better/faster/whatever than the equivilent Intel based PC is, they all use the same hardware these days. I have said it before - Apple come up with some pretty good things, nice ideas and designs, but I am not willing to give my soul to Steve and the Cult of Shiney. Oh, and when buying 2nd hand laptops, just remember that the web-cache is a LOT eaiser to completely clean than the keyboard... ![]()

For average users & office users current generation CPUs have been overkill for at least 1-2 generations with multicore technology. My Macbook Pro is ~1.5years old 2.4ghz Core2Duo with 4GB of memory. It quite happily runs VMWare for when I want to test Linux setups or windows apps. It has Microsoft Office (Purchased for under £10 though work). It downloads software updates in the background and asks me if I want to install the latest updates. Most of the time it runs firefox, itunes (streaming radio with one click) and that's it. As you know Mr SoulKiss, OSX is based on a BSD base so has excellent scheduling/memory/process management. With security/bug/feature patches there is no reason why this machine could not still be very useful to surf the web/listen to music and do the tasks normal people do in 2 years time. Why do I need 4/8/16/32/64 cores running at 4ghz with 32GB of memory to surf the web and listen to some music. Infact, the industry is going the other way to some extent with Atom processors for netbooks and desktops designed for your average users needs. So instead of buying an Atom laptop every 2 years, why not spend double the price, buy a Macbook and have it last 3 - 4 years easily. |

Think this just about sums up my view, in a somewhat more concise manner than I could achieve:

The thing is, that in 2 years time you will be able to pick up a NEW PC-based laptop/pad/tablet for about £150 which will have the same performance as the 2 year old Mac. Maybe its just me, but I buy things on the basis of "is it worth the price to me if it does what I want it to". I consider the money as spent and gone, never even consider the resale value, and, if I can avoid buying second-hand for certain things - with fragile items like laptops/mp3 players and the like you never REALLY know how hard a life they have had. I have a mate who is a BIG Apple fan, so I know how shiney it all is, and some of the cool things that he can do with them, but ultimately a few gizmo's and widgets are really not worth the hassle TO ME.

I'll accept it's a generalisation, but a lot of what is said in that article is true about mac users, maybe not you, but a lot of mac users i've come into contact with seem to have a pretentious air about them. It's a nonsense though, I know plenty of people who CAN afford a mac, but choose to go PC, it's not like you have to pass an IQ test to get a mac, so im not sure where this superiority idea originates, although I have no doubt that the f@cking idiotic adverts like the ones in that link don't help shake this perception. Another thing that particularly annoys me about macs is the limited support - ie you've got to take them to a 'genius bar' to get them fixed, at extortionate costs. An american friend who has a mac needed some work doing on it, and because he could only go to apple, it was going to cost a fortune for a fairly consumable part (i believe it was a battery, which was a big job because of the sealed cases on a macbook??) I just don't agree with paying over the odds for something which in MY opinion (and that of most other people around the world when you compare the market shares of microsoft and apple) IS NOT a superior product. |
