And it if were meant to be 'barth', 'grarss' etc, there'd be an 'r' in it. Bath has a short 'a' as does 'grass' etc. The imaginary 'r' is a southern corruption ![]() |

You know those round, pebbly things you often see on the ground. Yup, stones
Well they sound a bit like those little round cake things that taste so good with jam and cream! |

scone AKA scon / gone.
![]() we all know scone is the correct English pronunciation but it just sounds stuck up. I suppose its depends on where you come from.

I grew up in a part of the country where proper English (without accent) has been traditionally spoken in a time when school teachers actually cared enough to teach it and I pass as English in London without changing the way I speak except to drop the local slang which I don't use a lot anyway.
Each letter in the alphabet is fairly clearly defined (by you, not us) in the sound that it makes either singularly or in combination with other letters so it is interesting to note how many different ways 60 million people can murder there own language. ![]() I say scon knowing that scone is probably correct. This is one of those cases where I use the common form in words to avoid drawing attention to the way I speak. It can come across as hoity. |
