I like the pschological/adversity type books. I'd recommend
  • One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - Ken Kesey
  • Kite Runner and Thousand Splendid Suns - Khaled Hosseini
  • The Old Curiosity Shop - Charles Dickens
  • Hard Times - Charles Dickens
  • To Kill a Mocking Bird - Harper Lee
  • Of Mice and Men - Joh Steinbeck
I don't get a chance to read often but I get the ipod unabridged version (not the dramatised!) of the bigger books like Old Curiosity Shop and listen on my commute.

Just finished "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" by Paul Torday, excellent book and soon to be released as a film starring everybody's favourite biker, Ewan MacGregor.
Some other recent reads,
"LIFE" by Keith Richards. One of the best rock and roll books I've ever read. The man really is a legend.
"Hotel California" by Barney Hoskins. The story of west coast American music in the late 60's and 70's. Based around Laurel Canyon, David Geffen, CSN&Y, The Eagles, Byrds, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Gram Parsons et al. Good book.
"Enzo Ferrari" by Brock Yates. Very evocative book, interesting if you're into F1 or classic Ferrari's.
"David Jeffries" by Stuart Barker. Nine years since we lost him. Still very much in the hearts and minds of Tony and Louise as well as his many fans.
"Eleanor of Aquitaine" by Alison Weir, a biography of a 12th century Maggie Thatcher/Spice Girl/Lara Croft type lady. Fascinating.
"Ducati Singles" by Mick Walker. I WANT A 1974 350 DESMO. Please.

Big fan of Phillip K D i c k (censor thing won't allow me to type it as a single word ) although the quality of his novels is somewhat patchy, the short story collections, The Father Thing, Beyond Lies the Wub, Second Variety, Minority Report and We Can Remember it For you Wholesale are excellent.

Douglas Adams - just re-reading Hitchhiker's for the first time in years. Still absolutely brilliant.

Have also been digging through the old free books for Kindle on Amazon and have re-visited a heap of stuff that I read in childhood, H. Rider Haggard, Robert Louis Stevenson etc.

Last book I finished was another amazon freebie - Dracula. Really good read, no film has ever done it justice....

Dickens - tale of two cities, great expectations.
JG Ballard - super cannes.

We have Hitchhikers on CD from the original radio series, fantastic for long car trips. Dracula is one that I read recently as a freebie, I totally agree, it is a very good read that is so much better than any of the films about it have ever been.

Brilliant book! Keep meaning to pick up some other books by Torday but never get round to it. Anyone know if they are any good?

There are occasionally Ducati singles in Classic Bike, usually racers but sometimes very nice looking restored ones.

If Salmon Fishing in the Yemen is a popular film perhaps we'll hear more of Mr Torday and see some of his other books on the shelves. I'm looking forward to seeing the film, out in April I think.

Another good book I've just re-read for the umpteenth time is "On The Road" Jack Kerouac. It just makes me want to fly to New York, buy a beat-up Pontiac and hit the highways.
