Not possible... if there is no obstruction left or right. and barrels are not present... then problem will be obvious.

Maybe piston has come too far down and fouled crank, not sure this is possible on SV though.

Oh right ok,

one question I do have is the haynes manual is a bit breif on the engine timing and setting it,

Whats the best and easy way to set the timing on the sv?

From scratch

Set TDC front (F mark), set timing. Make sure slack is on tensioner side when you are looking. Then rotate engine one full turn (back to F again) and set rear ones according to timing marks.
Put tensioners in.

Then you can rotate to TDC rear and check valves make sense with how they should look. Rotate engine several times to make sure no fouling.

Yes TDC front is the F mark on rotor lined up with inspection port.

You rechecking timing then?

That is the "flying guess" school of problem solving. Someone who actually knows what they're on about will suggest a logical process of elimination. Someone who's done it before will suggest a logical process of elimination starting with the easy and cheap things to check

Where are you based?

Cheers guys! and could the timing being out cause this do you think? The engine is locked so solid that if you try to turn it it will undo the 17mm nut on the end of the crank that you turn the engine by hand

Yes very possible.

Strange that it ran first though, maybe a duff tensioner or snapped camchain.

always worth checking to see if its something simple, but in general i would say mayor rebuilds on modern engine aint worth doing, far cheaper to buy a good second hand engine if such a thing exists for a sv,when it comes to bandit engines i can get a good spare engine cheaper then buying a gasket set,as a matter of a fact i got 2 engines for my gsx600f for the price of a gasket set,and my god arnt they bl00dy heavy

Hey all, just wanted to say thanks for your help and advice, onc the engine was stripped down it was really obvious what had happened,

Basically 3 out of the four valves had failed in the rear cylinder, 2 of which had snapped and were inside the chamber, 1 of which had been smashed back into the head,

anyway i managed to get a second hand head complete on ebay for a tenner!

My sisters other half spent the day, dropped the engine out, complete top end rebuild and checks on the big end , fitted all the new gaskets, head bolts, rear head etc and pistons and rebuilt the bike and now its running like a dream!

Result!
