No I never bothered at all. The chain would stay well clean enough naturally.

I never really kept proper track but it was about every 3-4 tanks of fuel I would put a squirt into the oiler, just with a normal oil can, took 2 minutes if that to pump in.

I used various oils... used engine oil was great, EP80/90 sounds like a good idea but is too thick to flow properly, dexron2 worked great and I suspect is what actual scottoil is for 5x the price, chainsaw oil (bar oil) is also brilliant but I used to thin that 5050 with old engine oil.
Overall I'd say get the cheapest ATF you can find and use that.

When you have oil on the chain and not on the back wheel.

I tend to turn mine up until I can see flecks of oil appearing on the wheel and then turn it down slightly and that's normally about right. I also set it so that the chain doesnt look dry.

Its trial and error really and personally I've never relied on the numbers on the dial to give an accurate "drops per minute setting"

If I know I am going to be riding in adverse conditions / rain / or during winter. I would turn it up a little more so that more oil is going onto the chain.
No 'flippancy' taken, that's exactly the kind of answer I was after. I had it fitted last time I was in the UK (Sept) but, given the amount of riding I do in the 2-3 weeks I'm ever home, I never really got chance to play with it or check the consumption before laying the bike up to come back out to Saudi. So your explanation gives me something practical to go on, rather than "RTFM". Thank you, most obliged.
