The foam's definitely not an initial filter to keep crap out then?

Nah, definately not a filter- it doesn't contact the stock filter so there's no filtering effect involved.

Same as lifting the tank- more clearance between filter top and tank bottom. (and airbox top and tank bottom), or at least that's the idea... I wouldn't even guess how effective it is, unless you have the Rene filter in.

How did we get to it? Seems a natural progression, cheap easy mods to get more air in.
