Used it over a mates house back in the mid 90s, v impressed, but even then thought it was too slow to be much use. We sorted a special deal with the phone people where we could have any single phonecall for 50p, regardless of duration, then left if DL emulators and roms overnight.
Got into using messageboards when I was at uni, as well as using it for music (production and piracy

) and online gaming.
Didn't get it at home for years.
Nowadays I use it very narrowley, here, a music site, achewood.com and occassionally a search if I need something. Very rare for me to engage in random surfing anymore.
I remember reading in Streetfighter magazine a while back, someone describing the internet as "the new goldfish bowl to waste your life in front of". I'd argue it's better than TV by a long way. My academic writing and vocabulary has improved no end through debating (arguing?) with people on various MBs too. I do still certainly see it as a bit of a time thief though and where I lived for a year, made a concious decison not to get it, to force me to spend more time on music.
