My car was only 10,000 miles past the recommended time for cam belt renewal when it snapped.

indeed the ffoc does say 100,000 miles but haynes say 40,000 for the focus so what do you do? if it did snap on a 8 year old focus with say 90k on the clock i bet ford wouldnt pay.

My wifes Alfa went in for a 36k service at which point we discoved that belt changes had gone from 72k to 36k.

Service went from £250 to £650

IMO it aint worth tempting fate and landing yourself with a £3k bill for anew engine

I shopped around my local area and managed to get my cambelt changed for £100. Was happy with that. Prices ranged between that and well over £400.

does very much depend on the car, i did an 8 valve astra myself for just the cost of the belt where as a 16 valve engine does involve more work so garages charge more, this passat tdi ive just had would be a nightmare you cant get under the engine for a big like undertray being in the way and from the top of the engine its just a big cover? i wouldnt know where to start, i hate to think what VW would charge.
