Sometimes, particularly at tempory lights, I will be stopped, with the handbrake on, but if I see traffic approaching from behind, I will put my brakes on, so they see the lights, also do this one the bike if I have feet down, even if I don't need to hold the brake, I will until the next couple of cars are in place behind me.
Never ride the clutch unless slow moving, my car/bike is to precious to me ![]() |

's funny, my car is an E class Estate 320 diesel, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't do that. I'm a 'Y' reg so might be older than yours. I shall have to play with it tonight. I hate the handbrake as it's not a handbrake, but a foot operated brake

Stop moaning, lots of cars are different.
We have a honda legend, like the mercedes benz it has a parking foot brake. That takes around 10seconds to activate and about 3 seconds to deactivate. You can't do that at a set of lights otherwise you may pull up, then it just goes green and you will be sitting there for around 5 seconds looking like a kn*bhead! The car also has a mechanism to disengage the automatic clutch when the footbreak is activated at no speed. Thus not wearing the clutch out. I don't think it is physically possible to arrive at a set of lights and not just put your foot on the footbrake, same on a hill. However you can put the car in neutral put again it is pointless if you have your foot on the brake as the clutch disengages. You don't really use neutral unless you want to go coasting along, which is not advised in the highway code. Stop moaning as some cars have no other option!!!! |

Gear control and engine braking, of course you can do lights without touching the brake. As far a not using neutral, yes you should, why would you sit at lights with pressure on your brake pedal for approx 3 mins, if you have got a handbrake to do it |

I voted "Handbrake on, in neutral goodboy when stopped" but really I'm kinda leave it in first gear with the handbrake on ready to shoot off at the lights.

Around here, the handbrakes official name is Parking Brake. Up to you to figure out what that means then.
Using it to help with a uphill start results in an instant failure in the driving exam. The correct procedure (around these parts) is foot on the brake, release the clutch just to the point where it bites and holds the car without stalling, foot off the brake and apply gas. That'll make one of those kn*bheads who'll happily sit there dazzling everyone behind me because I won't take my foot off the brake. Sorry for letting you know I'm really stopped and not really going anywhere, like pulling out when bikes go past. ![]() |

Depends how long i am at the lights for most of them round here are quick changing anyway so by the time i have put handbrake on and put in nuetral its time to pull away. i do have the handbrake on when stopped for any length of time but it is usually in gear too. Unless i'm in for a long wait i tend to leave the car in gear. sometime i forget i have the handbrake on and have my foot on the footbrake too.
Am still learning the clutch balancing thing on hills but if the lights on a hill then its handbrake on. if i am turning right across traffic (on a hill) i tend to ride the clutch so that i can get across quicker when a gap opens up, i'm still learning everything though and i'm quicker that way than putting the handbrake on but i'm getting the hang of it. |
