Paws honey, CHILL!!! Are you the franchisee of the shop? Or are you "just another memebr of staff"?

Point i'm makig here is that its not your concern. I worked as a stored detective for a while, honestly, and if your shop is overly concerned about stock loss they should look at their security systems.

You as a member of staff are not tasked with or trained to stop and arrest a theif. If i came into your shop and took 5 jackets and blatantly ran out the door setting off all the alrams known to man...would you chase me down the road and put yourself at risk of serious injury or death? Do you think HG would you to or even be insured for you doing this? The anser is no.

All retail businesses factor in stock loss. Toys R Us even have (well used to this was many years ago i workeed there) a big wheelie bin out the back called the "Pilferring Bin" for items that had been opened on the shop floor and bits had been nicked out of, mainly build it yourself models and lego tbh.

Anyway, the point is that if the store thinks they are loosing too much too often they know what security is avaialbe to them and what is worthwhile and cost efective. CCTV is simply a detterant, its never actualy stopped anyone who is commited enough or knows a way past the bleeping barrier at the doors. Trust me, I've watched enough CCTV footage to know that.

And as far as the Polish person who you think was wearing the jacket nicked from your shop, ballsy move if it was they who actualy nicked it. But what if it wasnt? What if they had bought if of someone in a pub (or wherever) in good faith? And you'd go accusing them of theft?
Imagine it was you who just walked into a jewellry shop and had the staff say "Hey you, that looks just like the ring we had stolen from here yesterday" how offended would you be?

Look, it easy the first few times you witness stock loss or blatant theft to take it personaly and want to get involved. It shows you are a decent person with a firm set of moral beliefs and i like you for being that person. But i'd like you a lot more if you stayed with us and didnt get injured or worse to protect somone elses profit margin.
I'm not suggesting you turn a blind eye to it, far from it, rather to stay very detached from the issue and report what you can to whoever needs the info.

Heres a quick funny to show you how ineffective CCTV and all the security in the world can be at the end of the day. When doing security for Boots i got a letter of commendation from Boots Head Office to my local Police and my security firms head office for behaviour above and beyond the call of duty. Braking up a fight, with knives drawn in a shop with a heavily pregnant assistant manager on the floor too.
A few weeks later i tell a very rude and obnoxious manager at another Boots store to go take a flying leap as he cant tell me to stop following someone i have seen lift something just to go stand somewhere he wanted me to stand (he said it looked messy if i was walking about and not standing still ) The upshot of that was that i got a letter from Booots Head Office... this time telling me that i was banned from all Boots stores for life, as a worker or a customer, and would be removed on sight by the security staff.
Do you think i stopped going into Boots? Do you think i've ever been removed from one?
Security is as good as the person enforcing it and you my sweet are not the enforcer so put those claws away and just let it wash over you hun.

Interesting post by Spiderman - he's totally on the money about personal safety though.

It seems that thefts from HG are common place - I'm a regular visitor to HG in Darlington and know all the staff there. More often than not I call in for a coffee when I'm at work as I have to walk past it to get from the nick to my beat area (yes I am a "bobby"), and the lads n lasses in there tell me that they've had yet another helmet or some other expensive item go.

I managed to get someone successfully prosecuted last year for 2 pairs of boots found in their house during a raid (about £325 quids worth), and tried to offer some crime prevention advice like cameras etc, which the staff were very receptive too and assured me that my comments would be "passed up the line" - but when I went back later it would appear that the message "passed back down the line" was that it was not cost effective. OH REALLY so far in the last year or so I know that that particular branch of HG has had several helmts taken AND a one peice ARLEN NESS leather suit, so we are looking at about 3 grands worth of stock.

A simple camera covering the door, a video recorder and a TV to display the image (so the theiving TW*T can see him/her self as they come in) would cost what - £300 to install - saving HG about £2,300 against the loss.

Maybe that's why their kit costs so much - they factor in a hike in the prices to compensate.

nice work getting him for the 2 pairs of boots but was that the justification for the raid????

Also peeps please keep in mind that we are all talking retail value of goods here and thats not what the shops look at, they look at their loss value at what they paid for the stock and for lids / leathers and other high value items their markup can be anywhere between 40-60% minimum.

Some luxury items like Rolexes etc are markep up by a staggering 400% would you believe??!?!?!?!

So when we see aprox £2.5k of loss the shop is actualy seeing an aprox £1k loss of stock and bizarrely they prefer to lose stock they already paid for rather than pay agin for preventative measures that they cant see a profit margin showing against. Stupid but true.

ie X Stock bought in for £xx - sold for £xx - profit = £xx
Security bought for £xx - cant be resold - profit =£0 so money not so well spent as it made no profit at all.

I know babe but its the fact that theyve got the balls to do it that got me so mad! and he knew it was dodgy as drew asked when he got it from he looked nervous, shrugged and scuttled out the door.
Ok even if it wasnt him that stole it, Hes still bought stolen goods and knows who nicked it/who had it! i'd just like to see someone done for it as Friday we had ANOTHER jacket stolen! £150 one! and again it was polish guys last seen trying it on/looking at it..and no before anyone says it; im not racist etc but it seems rather obvs that when weve had large groups of polish guys coming in and stuff goes missing whose stealing it!
We ask if they need help etc and they shrug and walk off! and i can't watch every single one at once.

And Its got nothing to do with cost etc as yes we are claiming off insurance, its the fact that someones stolen what doesnt belong to them and is getting away with it that makes me so mad!

I bought boots and gloves at a Hein Gericke shop once, when I got home they still had the security tags on! I had to trudge all the way back in the rain and the alarm went off as I came in the door, they were all over me then....
