yeah, that SVspares site are out of stock but said they normally go for £370, so I'll find out Jordan's estimate before they go ahead with anything...

you dont seem to have understood what i was saying, the red light is a general warning light on FI bikes, once it comes on the LCD display will then show the issue. If on FI bikes they put one light for all the warning thtere would be at least 3 extra lights.

On some 2strokes, if the oil is in aseperate resovoir then its possable to have an oil level, there are several other bikes with oil level lights, but there are not many.

I think now you will check you bikes fully in the future and not ride them like car drivers expecting them to always work flawlessly until the next service.

I even once knew a car driver, she killed the engine and when she took it to the garage they asked how long the red light on the dash was on, she just said that she thought it was ment to be on. Duh..

I'd get on to the phone to them now mate - make sure that you know the cost of any investigation works that they may do. - i.e. to give you a diagnosis, and a cost for repair, they may have to strip some parts off, and you may incurr cost - they also won't release the bike until its paid...

If it has been run out of oil a repair is totally pointless. You're looking at 300 quid to go inside the cases, plus 250 (iirc) for new crank, more for rods (probably, might just need shells) gaskets, bearings, all the rest, probably 500 or more labour to build the motor. At that price it makes more sense to get a falicon crank and do it yourself :P

All of a sudden 350 for a new engine doesn't seem too bad in comparison. I would make a flying guess at 150 labour to swap motors.

Agree...that was the point I was trying to make, and failing - you dont want this garage to do any work on the bike (and charge you for it) if you are going to swap the engine anyway (which it sounds like you probably will)

Mmm, this sounds like how my bike died on me,unfortunately this turned out to be a snapped crankshaft. In my case this was visable by taking the clutch cover off. Like you said it sounded like the engine note had changed, but by coincidence I'd just bought a new skid lid so thought it was just a case of different accoustics compaired to my old lid. The oil lights etc are unfortunately not of any great use regarding a potential failure and really can't be a safe way of checking your oil, you have to keep a regular check on the sight glass. Make sure you know whats what before any work is carried out because if your engine is stripped and rebuilt using new parts your gonna be in for a shock when you get the bill. sorry to here about your missfortune and I hope yours isn't the same case as my bike.
