1) get bowl/bucket/something, place under bike.

2) undo sump bolt, let oil drain out.

3) undo oil filter, let oil drain out.

4) go have some dinner while oil drains

5) replace oil filter, sump bolt (new crush washer if nesseccary)

6) undo oil filler cap, put in new oil, replace oil filler cap. Start bike up, then re check oil level and top up as nessecary

7) go do whatever else you do in the evening

Or something like that. As for service history, I try my best to keep a record of parts purchases, and try to keep a record written of what was done at what miles. But since I don't plan on getting rid of the SV (worth more to me as a cheap fun form of transport than the money its actually worth) then I don't really care too much. Oil and oil filter changes every 5000 miles, plugs every 10,000, valves every 15,000 and an air filter when the current one looks a bit manky (it does)

Matt
TBH from now on my oil changes are going to get done at Essential.

I had to pop in there for tyres not long after I did my oil change and I think that it came out to be within £5 of DIY AND they get rid of the oil for you too..

Its about right, I paid £185 for mine and that included an MOT. Changed oil, oil filter, checked plugs, did not need renewing, adjusted clutch, Lubed everything that needs it, torqued nuts. Just a usual basic service. I was happy with that.

The actual profit after removing all costs is possibly less than the average geeks hourly rate in a normal job!.

My 50k p/a rent/rates/insurance/wages/paye/etc etc dont get given to me for free.

So when a dealer charges a price for a service such as £120-£150 dependant on area for a 4k service they are far from taking the **** thank you.

Would you work for free

Luckily i actually make more money from people that bring in bikes having totally mucked up their home servicing and or putting right bikes that after 20k or so havent ever been serviced properly!. Things range from cracked sumps / rusted in plugs as they have never been changed / snapped off caliper mount bolts / throttle bodies that have never been balanced etc etc.

If you know what your doing fine..save some money.

Hell no, but why can the smaller shops do the same job for a fraction of the price?

Look at jordans suzuki, I'm sure there extortionate workshop rates are to pay the electricity bill for all the flashy halogen lighting they have in the showroom!

£40 in labour to change oil to increase their chances of flogging some powerranger a new R1... fackoff!

Just as an example, went to the local dealer for a new tyre.

£153 for a new rear tyre, metlezer or something, and a hours labour @ £70 for a 10 minute job.

They guy i know, told me to go to another guy for the tyres.

£80 for a medium compound dunlop, and that was total price, fitted it for free.

My dealer seemed to be very overpriced, kilted ginger i remember said he got his DL handguards for £25 from his suzuki dealer, whereas i get charged £36.99 + P&P..

At least there's a couple sensible posts in this thread where what you might get an idea of what you get for your money. The oil change may be the only thing of substance that the service entails, but as stated in G's post there is much more that should be done and is worthwhile, particularly if you're not too handy with the spanners yourself, as you may not even know it needs doing.

Very good posts above

Over the years, I've only over used Dealers/friend/friend of a friend for valve checks/adjustment but always find a lot of usual 'Stealer threads/talk' quite amusing.

Ask anyonewho is employed if they are payed enough and the answer would more than likely be 'Not enough'. YET, everyone expects a dealer to hold in stock all spares for every bike they sell, charge the same as the man who works from a Tree Shade garage, yada yada yada......

xXBADGERXx ...kinda trying to understand the why/how here and nothing else... you said, the dealer quoted £125 but if I've read your previous post correctly(don't hold me to that), you spent £55 on the bits to do the job(?).

That leaves us with £70 for labour. I can't see how anyone can call that extracting the Urine...if we are to agree that the time spent, would be about two hours

Thats a good way of making sure you get what you pay for Maria had her car first serviced by a guy her dad knows, and trusted.

Her car will be looked after by my dad from now on (even if he forgets to reset the "service now" thing)
