How can counter steering be a bad habbit? -giggles-

Pilot Road 2 is more like it..

+1!

Why do you consider countersteering and trail braking bad habbits?

If you don't counter steer... you crash! Now thats a bad habbit!

Trail braking is an advanced rider skill, not a bad habbit.

I only say its a bad habbit as road surfaces are not smooth enough to do it safely - I hit a pot hole trailling the brakes summer last year and got a bit of a front end slide on. I ended up catching the front end again (luckily) but was so low it folded my peg up and I had to rest the side of my boot on the floor with my knee slider taking the brunt of the weight to get the front end back (ala colin edwards)

Counter-steering - there is nothing better!! especially when the front end comes up after the apex and you end up with the wheel pointing the wrong way to the direction of travel up in the air WOOT!

Pics time.

Here's the 2CT front. The last ride I did before taking it off was a gentle one so the orange peel has gone but you can still see the change in rubber...

and this is the current Racetec which is what the 2CT above looked like after a hard ride to Hawes...

Which is why I'm inclined to believe there's a bit of 2CT going on in the racetec too.
Rubber change in exactly the same place.

The edge should feel sticky and you should be able to feel where the change is as well as see it. I'll photograph my front this weekend and put a pick up.

My rear atm is only a Dunlop Road smart though so the lean angle isnt as much as a PP2 rear would be. Ive got about 10mm chicken strips on the front...

It looks like its only the last 10mm is the sticky stuff, so it sounds like im not making use of the good bit. Bah! Why is it only on the very edge for christs sake?

Ill take a pic and show you my front and back tyre's.

Sorry, should have made it clearer where the change is.

This is where the compound starts to feel sticky and has a difference appearance...

Seems the tyre fitter fitted you up too

Really you think its that far up? Hmmm. Ill be using that then if thats the case. I cant see so well the change on mine though

here are the pics of my two tyres...

Will losing a little pressure in the back will allow it to lean further without falling off of the edge? Its strange that the recommended tyre pressures on the falco are higher than the RSV even though the suspension, weight distribution, wheels, steering angle, overall weight, etc, are the same (or close enough to not matter!). Whats that all about?

PP2ct front...

Rear Dunlop Road smart... You can tell where the harder centre is, its got all the crap sticking to it!

Nick, Its about hot pressures. RSV is a sportier bike therefore will be (in theory) be ridden harder, producing hotter tyres and higher pressures than the more "sports touring" falco.

from the wear on your tyres I'd say you don't need a 2Ct front. You aren't pushing them enough to warrant the extra potential grip. (or a sportier tyre than a sports tourer)

The biggest difference between the Pilot Power and the Pilot road (or indeed the Road smart and other Sports touring tyres) is the profile. The Pilot powers are a much more angular tyre giving a much bigger contact area when at ligher lean angles. They are much more triangular.

The difference in compount is secondary in terms of how the bike handles. A bike on pilot Powers will drop into a corner much more readily than a bike on Pilot roads (or other Sports touring tyres) This is by design asn a sports touring tyre is presumed to spend the vast majority of it's life in the centre of the tyre so the footprint here is larger. A pilot Power is designed so spend a greater percentage of its life at higher angles of lean so the footprint there is larger.

You'd *really* notice a difference if you fitted a Pilot power rear to go with that 2CT front. The bike is transformed in terms of handling and will steer a *lot* quicker than it does now.

But having a smaller rear straight line footprint from the pilot powers is not a good thing for someone who uses their bike for every day use as the power is being transfered through a smaller footprint in a straight line leading to greater wear and the potential to square off more quickly. You'd probably not notice the smaller rear footprint in terms of grip (in a straight line) as the sportier compound makes up for the smaller footprint.

If your commute involves more than 50% staight roads then the sports touring tyres are the better option. If the route contails less than 50% staight roads then the Pilot power becomes the sensible option.

Indeed mate, I understand all that. I like the Pilot Power front and Pilot Road 2 rear, gives good front grip in turns (which I like). The last time I went I asked for a PP but got a PP2ct, so thought ah lets try it...

I do push the bike on my local twisties, though I don't tend to just go up and down them pushing it, maybe I should, I might start to shred the tyre a little more like you? I have been wondering if perhaps me weighing nacker all and the bike being reasonably light (205KG's fully wet, a SS600 is 195KG!) and me weighing 63KG meaning that I dont push my tyre's as much as others might?

Ill have to go out and have some more fun.

Oh and the front when warm from playing a little on the way home (so about 2 miles of twisties after the motorway) is 39psi, cold its 35. What should warm temp be?

Cheers Berlin.
