or is just a 30 sign enough?

Well all roads into our village (near Stratford on Avon) are 60 straight to 30. (Or used to be, just recently most have become 50 to 30!) Straight transition though, no countdown.

BTW, I hate countdowns, cause the cage in front always seems to think that the 300yd marker is the 30 limit sign, cue heavy braking etc.

Just a thought, Hovis, but if there'd been countdown limits of 50, 40, 30 you would have got a full house! ( assuming it's the now infamous Llanberis speed limit scam )
Hope there's no brown envelope 4U

well it just goes to show that a camera doing people for speedin makes you aware of the speed limits, its made u notice the signs and i bet you didnt speed once( well not as excesively) just a shame it takes something bad to happen to them for it to sink in as opposed to hearing other peoples dilemmas

It's a valid point about the signs Hovis, was the area subject to street lighting? If not there is a requirement for appropriate speed limit signs and if they are overgrown people have been known to argue the case. Personally in my experience the camera partnerships are fairly clued up to these things and generally don't go somewhere they can't enforce. It's usually the local bobby responding to local complaints that gets caught out. As for countdown markers, well Mrs. Smith from No.3 doesn't send someone up the road to warn you she is pulling off her drive......it's up to you to ride/drive at a speed that allows you to react to such things.

I rode up to NW4 and noticed this was a curiously welsh thing, at first I started slowing down for the "30mph in X yards" signs...

It's not common down south and tbh I don't think there's one example on the IOW, not even a warning that there's a slower limit approaching...

I know of peeps who have tried to argue that there was no signage only to be told that they should know that, for example, "there are street lamps not more than 200 yards apart" then its a 30mph road. Signange isn't always needed and the onus is on you the road user to know what the limit is for the road you are on, not the local Govt to put up relevant signs.
This is totally correct - the sign isn't actually required. In a built up area (and a village qualifies) the speed limit is 30 unless there are signs to the contrary.

So hard luck Hovis. I thought us bikers were supposed to be experts on this sort of thing
