I still dont understand why anyone would buy something that doesn't do what they want it to do without needing to be seriously messed around with - and thats from someone who ENJOYS seriously messing around with stuff (see my Custom Firmware PSP's for example, or my hacked to use the Nokia Firmware instead of the T-Mobile Firmware N95) but in those examples they STILL did what I wanted them to do out of the box...
In the case of the iPhone, I think that there are two particularly strong reasons why people choose to jailbreak their phones. These are to enable tethering without paying network tethering fees, and to install pirated apps. In other words, to get something for free, which you would otherwise have to pay for, rather than to enable any new functionality.

In the case of tethering, it's perhaps justifiable. If you've got a mobile data plan, then why should they charge more if you're using your phone as a modem, so long as you stay within your limit. I think that most people who are installing sshd on their phones are doing so to enable tethering for free, rather than paying for it.

If people are jailbreaking for piracy, then I've little sympathy, as most iPhone apps only cost a couple of quid anyway.

Er there is a third option and that is to install apps that apple does not like or want.

Apple controls your Iphone totally and utterly, it chooses how and from where you install every app and how they work, if you do not want that then jailbreak is the way round it. Personally I refuse to buy one as I'd have issues with apples control over it and the need to jailbreak it to get the functionality I want.

Plus, jailbreaking is the only way to install your own SMS alert.
