General scientific assumption is no but since all 3 male members of my family are and it is much more prevelent in males tahn females i think there must be at least a genetic componant to it.

Yes I'm Dyslexic, and it not something I tend to talk about, It is a bit embarrassing when your 11 year old daughter tell you "No daddy, read that part again." when I reading them a bed time story.
And my missus is pee'd off with "How do you spell ....xxxxxxx" what ever I can't spell.

Then my mother bought me a dictionary for school which was as she though a good idea. But it is not, As whats the point of a dictionary if you do not know how to spell the word in the first place..!

So yes, to your question.
Richie, I had no idea you were dyslexic until this week, so you do a really good job of coping with it, IMO. You shouldn't be embarrassed about it either, you seem to be in pretty good company on here!

More prevalent in males? I didn't know that either.

Off the wall thought here, but women on the whole seem to be able to multi-task better than men. Maybe women use their brains in a different manner, and this makes them less likely to suffer from dyslexia. It may well be a gender thing, caused by differences in the brain.

I've yet to see any convincing evidence of this. I know both men and women who multi-task brilliantly, and also some who do not. Gender does not seem to make any difference at all.

I have dyscalulia. It's like dyselxia - which could be defined as word blidness - but with numbers. I just can't read numbers in the correct order.

But I can overcome it. I need to. I teach statistics - and write cheques!

i have that issue... random numbers like 1382 i would read as say 1832 bit of a pain when our filing system is based on the last 3 digits of a 4 digit number... i spend loads of time looking for missed filed files..

My youngest has slight dyslexia and ADD. When my wife and I attended his screening tests we had some similar results so I guess we're both a bit too. Nothing to be ashamed of. I'm not that good with memory either and only remember the most important things. On the other hand my IQ is quite good and so is my son's. The wife never had her IQ tested but she outwits me all the time so she must be good .

Well, my MP doesn't believe it really exists and is only an excuse for poor teaching
IMO I think alot of the time the symptoms are misdiagnosed, and people are labellled dyslexic when they are not. I personally do believe a smaller number people do genuinely have the condition.

The same goes for ADHD in children and depression in adults, GPs are too quick to diagnose patients as depressed then hand out medical, my local GP is renown for it.

Its unfortunate because now depression is seen by many as minor condition, where in fact depression can be a very serious illness.
