Can't see what the fuss is about to be honest. No bid was made so you were effectively not involved in the bidding. No bids, so auction withdrawn. That's the way it goes sometimes. You didn't win or lose anything.

I always put my maximum bid in from the start. I consider what I think it's worth or how much I am willing to pay and bid that. I'll then forget about it until after the auction and wait for an email to let me know if I won or lost the auction. If someone wants to put in a snipe bid a few pence or pounds above my maximum, then fine. They were obviously prepared to pay more for the item than I was. Simples.
