how can such a wonderful idea as randomest thread be closed before you've even had a drink and started typing Nic?

I shall try whistling to my cat - the mighty Macdiesel - tomorrow, but as he is as thick as a fridge door I am not hopeful of a good result

Nope, they'll be stuck in the cat until he learns...

This sort of experiment requires a highly scientific approach so, based on comments in previous posts, I carried out the following steps before proceeding:

1) I checked my cat isn't a jack russell.

2) I enlisted the help of a second whistler in case my rendition wasn't very good. Which it wasn't.

The results were somewhat disappointing. At first, my cat looked at us warily, worried that our strange behaviour posed some threat. Satisfied that our whistling was not dangerous, he then settled back to a look of disdain.

I only have one cat. Of course, if I had more, I would have positioned a 'control cat' in another room, to compare the results.

Tried it with all 4 of mine.
One looked at me in pure disgust.
Second look bemused and then put a paw on my mouth until I stopped.
Third just ran off.
Fourth looked bemused for a second and then preceded to beg for food.

So I tried playing the song to them whilst they were all on the sofa and I didn't even get a look, humpf

Good data!

It seems that only a very few do the crazy drooling with affection thing. And both were females.

So we almost catagotically confirm that its only femails that it affects, unless it also affects so far undiscovered males. We need more data before we can be conclusive.

Interesting too that so many effects to the whistling have been observed. Results might also be directly proportional to the quality of the whistle. It ahs to be in the same octava nd key as that in the song to work. A lowere register doesn't seem to have the same effect. Much as in a wine glass resonating.

Let the data collection continue.

Still no word on the rabbit and Hamster results?

I think for the results to be conclusive, the same whistler will be required...
