Thee is nothing more guaranteed to place someone than by the way they speak. I am ever so concious of it and have attempted to correct my own children all their lives. I am sure they must hate me for it, but I cannot help myself.

I do not understand "street" talk and have no desire to learn. Having a Lancashire accent is something I am proud of.

We live in an age of aspiring social mobility. However, my own personal opinion is that will remain a pipe dream whilst schools continue to turn out fodder for the dole queues incapable of holding a conversation.

In my formative years I was educated by nuns who needed no encouragement to wield the cane or a 3ft wooden rule (flat edge for girls, sharp edge for boys) to 6/7 yr olds. You learned quickly manners, pronunciation and even deportment. Uniform including caps/socks/raincoats were regulation, shoes/hands inspected daily. Poor girls were even checked that they had regulation green knickers, summer straw boaters, winter green brim hats with the school badge etc. I am quite sure some of my teachers would be spinning at the suggestion that init! etc was considered by some an acceptable part of normal English speech.

All said in breathless excitement.

I have to try and block it out but I've started wearing earplugs. I would like to reassure Sal that they are puils at the Girls High School and not the one where she is a teacer up the road.
I thought everyone in Essex spoke like that anyway??

Can I just say that if anyone else mentions a certain vinyl sticking error I will zap this thread!

That doesn't count as a poor expression

Hail to thee, Messie. Be not perturbed. For much as the common speech hath changed since thou wert a youngling, ever has it been so. Even unto our forefathers times.

Or as our American managers like to say, "Get over it!" I'm hoping that won't be adopted over here any time soon.

Messie you really need 'to think outside of the box'

What box, who's box, where's the box in relation to the person, how big is the box I need to think outside of?

Twaddle talk

"Going forward" - If one more sales rep uses that expression while talking to me about their courier services, I am going to implant 6 laceholes of Nike trainer in his rectum at great speed.

My boss and I have already spoken about this and we've come to the conclusion that we will only deal with a company whose rep gives us straight talk, with none of the bullsh1t bingo catchphrases.
