I think that coasting with the engine off is frowned upon especially in cars (or on some BMW bikes) as then you don't have any servo assisting the brakes which will surprise you when you try and stop.

Coasting with engine on, but clutch disengaged or in neutral isn't a problem, but some of the more modern engines use less fuel if you keep the transmission driving the engine - some modern diesels have what feels like stuff all engine braking due to this "feature".
