It is my understanding that diabetics can be both blood and organ donors. Although I have not yet given blood since my type 2 diagnosis 3 months ago.

I know there's not - if you drink the right stuff. I'm refering more to the blue plastic bottles of White Star/White Lightning etc, as prefered by that section of society that prefer to be refered to as Chavs.

At the moment, being on the system or not can still be made irrelevant by next of kin deciding something else on your behalf. And unless they change that, opt in or opt out will also be potentially irrelevant. If you want to donate, make sure your next of kin know. If they don't, you could be carrying 7 cards in each pocket and have it tattooed on your backside that you are a donor and next of kin can still withdraw consent on your behalf.

They can have mine but it'd be a bit like taking parts off a bike that's been at the bottom of a lake for a decade. There'll be nothing left worth having!

I'm afraid I'm somewhat indifferent to the whole business because of the reasons DJF and others have raised, i.e. if the powers-that-be want to sort it out then change the law so that I can say what happens to my bits and pieces when I croak. I can't "opt in" now, other than by virtue of a meaningless piece of plastic and a nod in the right direction, so I don't see how I can "opt out" unless they change the laws giving me, in my living state (more or less), power to determine.

Basically it makes no difference what I say one way or the other legally, so I'll ignore it. Sorry folks. Give me the authority and it'll be a different kettle of worms.

I never wanted to be a donor until I had kids, then my whole perspective changed and now anyones welcome to whatever they like, just make sure any recipients dont have a chocolate allergy cos that constitutes 85% of me

I wonder though, Im not allowed to give blood, would they want my bits and bobs....
