Can i just say, the solid white line doesnt mean 'no overtaking', it means you cannot cross the line. To my understanding.

So overtaking a bike, on a bike, whilst keeping in the same lane, is perfectly legal.

Double white lines where the line nearest you is solid. This means you MUST NOT cross or straddle it unless it is safe and you need to enter adjoining premises or a side road. You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less.

Personally I tend to ride as if the next vehicle coming the other way is being driven by an idiot. Staying the right side of double whites is usually part of that

You need a saint at times when you stuck behind some one slow. But it's solid for a reason.Yes bikes can speed up and slow much faster than the cars but is it worth the points and fine..

Yeah his positioning was awful, although he had (I think) the right angle on the corner, and could've maybe held it for just a moment longer and he'd of got past the car. No doubt he got target fixation, puckered and slammed his front on picking the bike up. But then maybe he had no traction. I dunno. Daft sod.

No definitely not worth it, I'm still 33bhp club for (just!) 2 more months. So I really cannot afford to get done now, I'd have to redo everything after 6 points!

I see lots of double whites in very sensible places, where you can't see what's ahead or there's a hidden dip big enough to hide a car. Even on a bike it's worth staying well clear of those opportunities.

Occasionally they're put in places where it would be dangerous to overtake in a car, but safer on a bike. I hate missing these opportunities, but I'd rather save my points for speeding offenses.

I'll always sit behind a car for a bit trying to find a good overtake spot, but some places theres nothing but double white lines. And I guess if everything is as safe as any other overtake you'd attempt then it should be okay.
Just keep an eye out for plod, can't imagine they'd look too kindly..

Yeah, I hate it when they put double white lines along a section of road which clearly has enough visibility for a safe overtake. I make a point of not overtaking though unless the road markings permit it.

Second only to my hatred of roads like the A68 where they have tactically placed a speed camera on all of the overtaking spots you could use in an average family car. What that contributes to road safety I have no idea.

Is that the A68 in England or Scotland? When I used to use that road 10 years ago, you had to look out for 3 legged road signs after you crossed into Scotland. Lothian & Borders used to hide the cameras behind directional signs.
