Strange I was very close to buying a Blade a few years ago. However as it turmned out I'm rather glad I didn't bother!

I seriously doubt they would take the throttle slides out to see if they have a whole in them, brake pads are fairly obvious things really.
Trust me they will, 2 hours at the side of the road, take your bike to bits, AND don't even have to put it back together again, AND can stop you from doing so, making you get recovered (or of course you get done for driving away on an unroadworthy vehicle ).

Generally it's the Police with DVLA bods in attendance, if they stop you, you're there until they find something, anything.

Cheers Mark.

The law was different when I was younger,I could only have a 250 up to passing my test, I did not though spend my time running around on a Z1900. The basics are exactly the same.
It is a bit different around here, probably similar as in Spain. There are also two license categories, Al ("ligeira", light motorbike) and Ap ("pesada", heavy motorbike). First goes up to 400 cc or something around 30kw power (can't be arsed to look for the exact figure now), the other covers everything from mopeds to Rocket IIIs...
So we also have the restricted option but no one cares to do it, we pretty much stick to the cc rule. As for who can get which license, you can take Al at 18 (do your test on a light bike, normally some pretty knackered GN250) and after 2 years it'll automatically be an Ap, or wait till you're 21 and then get the Ap straightaway (taking your test on a GS / CB500), even if you're never ridden a pushbike before.
Taking your license normally means 20 hours practical lessons (which get down to basically 8 - 10 hours saddle time) doing 8s and u-turns and crawling with traffic behind the driving school car and passing an exam that basically consists of doing 8s without putting your foot down and not dropping the bike for 10 - 15 minutes...

Add to that the fact that Portugal is at the top of the charts for 750 - 1000 cm3 new bike sales and you get pretty nasty casualty figures... there are lots of dumb kids with money that still think the only bike worth having is a Hayabusa, and life below 200 km/h is slow
