source yourself a new engine and get it fitted. providing you trust the source of the engine it'll work out cheaper in the long run i'd bet.

Is it the rings then? Bad news
Did he strip it right down to check? And why did he think they'd gone so early?

Both of them reckon it is, going to finish off stripping her this week so its not DEFINATE but quite likely.
Looks like she was badly abused before i bought her

Ouch, sounds expensive. Is that the reason it was rattly compared to to the dealer one you tested?

Bad luck. There's 3 pointy engines on ebay right now.

The pointy engines can be used, you just might need to use a few bits from your old one.

And a different exhaust

Remind me about this- I've not got time to get the engine out and tear the top down just now, but I should do at the weekend. Alternatively, if you go the route of a whole replacement engine I'll have yours off you, easier than rebuilding the bottom end and who knows what else on the de-cranked one I have

Have they stripped the engine right down?If so you should be in a position to see if it's a rings problem(like one broken hence rattle) and just replace them.I was just thinking about how much money they will want for work already done and your cheapest option from where you are now.
