I actually have a problem with copper discretion on this. I know the anti camera lobby will say that a copper will only give a speeding ticket when it's deserved, and will only ever not when it's not... I don;t think that's the case at all. I don't see why the decision of whether or not you get a ticket should be down to whether the cop's in a good mood, or whether he likes your face, or your t*ts, or your attitude, or his daughter's going out with a biker and so he hates them all, or his wife's just left him. Discretion is fundamentally unfair. Let the courts make that decision.

I drive around 40-50k miles per year and this is my first speeding offence since passing my test in 1988. Oh well
Good skills, thats a lot of mile and not getting caught. Im sure that you could have tried harder, 82 is a bit pathetic

Bad luck mate - I believe people can drive safely at 80mhph. I saw the police armed with a speed gun the other day on the A23. On the plus side, he was being transparent with what he was doing and there was no hiding in bushes....

However, it annoyed me that he totally ignored a Subaru that was right up my butt which I would consider much more dangerous than travelling at 80mph.

Yep discresion does allow bias.

Discretion happens of course, because people realise that speeding in one location doesnt necessarily carry the risk of speeding somewhere else. The problem is, getting a judge to consider every single case isn't really feasable.

Personally, I think the whole idea of a speed limit is wrong, they should be considered as guides (lets face it, that's what most people use them for anyway). If you're caught speeding to excess, then you should be hauled before a judge to answer a charge of careless/dangerous driving.

Too true Bud. A little off topic but the German police think the same way. They have some gadget that measures the gap between 2 vehicles and their speed. If you're caught with a gap less than the legal minimum (something like 1 metre for every 1 kph, but don't quote me) then expect a fine/ban.

You have more faith in humanity than me though I can't disagere with the idea in principle, as you say that's exactly how I use speed limits as it stands. I just don't like the idea of everyone else being allowed to do the same
