I bought the SV before I passed, jumping the gun a little, but it was going cheap...

ok funny that, probably not. Didn't get my first big bike till 3 months later after passing and that when i was 18. Just sounds such a rush from 50cc to er.....an extra 6 on the front. i went 50cc, 100cc, 400cc, then SV650.

Anyway sorry for the de-rail

Approved person? rubbish. The certificate stuff is urban myth. There is no legal requirement. The law simply states the motorcycle must be restricted to 33bhp. Not who can restrict it.

As Billy said, both must be fitted by a dealer and certificate will be issued. FI international have a database of restricted bikes that they have sold kits for. Also the dealer has to buy the kit on your behalf, they don't sell directly to the consumer.

Taken from the FI international Website: (Also see link above)

"NOTE: Restrictor kits can only be fitted by an approved and qualified dealer. Fitting also registers the restriction into the FI International master database and this will generate a certificate that you will recieve as proof of restriction."

Is that enough to convince you Flamin Squirrel?

My interpretation on it all is that it doesn't have to be done by anyone approved but should be done by someone approved unless whoever is doing it knows fully what they are doing.

Apologies to everyone for keeping this tread going long after it started to smell!
But we did start off talking about restricting a pointy, and doing that by ECU is about as difficult as pluging something electrical into a wall socket in your house!

Yep. If you can put a cartridge into a games console, you can change a pointy ECU. I honestly can't see anyone successfully wangling out of liability because you didn't pay someone "authorised" to plug it in for you. The important thing is that the bike is 33bhp, IMO.

A world of difference
Considering a 125 may have 12 hp. A restricited SV has the same characteristics as a full power up to about 7K revs.

You can get 125s tuned up to 30hp or so, but its still a whole different animal, RS125s and the like go like stink and are great fun, but they still aren't proper bikes.
