defensive?

i already said, i'm an interested party asking for other people's opinions, you don't have to talk to me, and it's a helluva lto easier to ignore me on here than with me inserting a megaphone in your ear on the street

if you don't want to discuss the topic then don't, but there's nothing wrong with asking someone a question about what they believe, if someone wants to ask me a question about my thoughts then go ahead, i won't cross my arms and stamp my feet claiming it's not your right to ask me, i'll either answer you or tell you to **** off

The person who has freedoms taken away bit by bit to support crazy religious extremist's phony wars. And the fundamentalist Muslims fighting back

The person who watches the biggest tax swindle of all time take place in the worlds most profitable business

The person who sees children indoctrinated forcefully in to a way of ignoring evidence an logic

The person who has his country run by someone who believes in a big man with a big beard (who looks suspiciously like santa) who lives in the clouds, and wishes eternal damnation for the death of his illegitimate son; of which I had no say in.

How's that for starters?

asuming you're not sub-normal in terms of intelligence, when you were young did you believe in santa? the tooth fairy? unless you're surname is dawkins then the answer is "probably" - despite being intelligent - you believed because people you instinctively trusted told you it was true

as you got older, you became enlightened through learning and now the tales of santa etc seem childish to you, yet you're not stupid

It depends what you mean by "believe in the stories" - are you talking about (for example) Adam & Eve? Do I believe it literally? No. Do I believe it as a possible illustration of how my ancestors had a personal relationship with god (and then it got garbled)? Yes. Do I think the earth is 4000 years old? No. Do I have a problem with evolution and Darwin? Not at all....
If you're questioning it, then good But if you don't believe in the word of god (as spoken through his biggest fans), then can you claim to be christian? Surely that makes you a deist?

I also believed I could fly if I ran fast enough. Personal experience has suggested that leads to grazed knees; and very very brief flight.

Difference between god and santa is; you aren't expected to believe in them your whole life . At 30, your mother isn't going to be filling your head with that tripe.

On your point though; what makes god more credible than santa? I'd go as far to say there are more films, books and images of the bearded red man, than the bearded cloud man

In a scientific society, it's almost impossible to maintain a belief in the typical God - or any God, for that matter. Theologians such as Dietrich Bonhoeffer instead preferred the idea of a God that sacrificed himself and allows himself to be withdrawn from the world stage, leaving behind a christocentric theology whereby Christ is a role model to us and we live our lives through sacrifice. It's quite a nice idea, I got a first on a 6000 word essay on this subject recently in a module called Death of God.

I'm not religious btw.

*laughing* but how is it the word of god? As I (to my shame) only read English, I read the KJV Bible in English, knowing that it is a translation from the Greek, Latin, Hebrew and probably more languages - I think its plausible that several words and phrases cant be translated into english from these languages (dont ask me which one and no I cant remember the expert who told me this).

I consider myself christian as I was raised catholic and Im not kosher lol. "Christian" in my definition is a person who tries, to the best of their ability, to follow the 10 commandments and who practices goodwill towards other lifeforms.

If you want a label - from what I understand of the labelling system, I think I would be considered a non-practisting Shinto (as it relates to nature) Christian with shades of reincarnationist. Complicated, who, me?
