If anyone is actually serious about buying a bike, then they should go and test ride the thing, rather than relying on 'man on the internet' opinion.

Half of these "I'm thinking of buying X bike, what do people think" threads are merely people toying with ideas. If I was serious about trading up to a different bike, the last place I would start would be a web forum.

You and me both, Luke, but unfortunately there are a few people who rely on the opinions of the more 'experienced' (read - prolific) posters to get their advice from. I can see that if a number of people say "don't buy that bike, they're boring" then they'll not even bother taking one for a test ride. What they have to remember is that on this forum the bias will always be towards the SV650 first, and any other Suzuki second, so if you're asking about a Honda CBR600 there will usually be a negative vibe, but ask about a GSXR600 SRAD and the response will be better. I'd rather own a CBR myself, because they are to me a far better built bike.

Truth be known, Suzuki make average bikes, same as Yamaha make average bikes, Kawasaki make average bikes and Honda make slightly above average bikes as do Triumph - so whoever is asking the question may as well ignore everything negative they hear (with the exception of reliability advice, because that is 99% of the time correct) and just go try for as many bikes as they can for themselves.

Lukemillar your post has nothing to do with the question I asked, so in future if you have the urge to post something in one of my threads with the intent to make myself look as if I was stupid to ask the question then please just bite on a piece of leather or anything handy at the time. Your above reply was of no use to me whatsoever.

The reason people as the question initially is because it can lead to other things (about the bike still, not veering off to a conversation like you tried) just like Graciepants replied with. I now know an important defect to look out for when I am out viewing.

Also there were posts saying it was a great bike and yes, there were some posted that it was a pile of sh*t. Thats fine, Personally I didnt like the sv I used to have.

Thanks everyone else who posted but the bike I went to see turned out to be a terrible example. Ive now decided to wait until next year to buy a bike which will hopefully be a Honda vfr800. Meanwhile Ive joined a golf course... which will keep me busy during the summer

VFR800i... please don't. I'm not a fan, and those who owned the older 750 rated them as better than the 1998 onwards 800cc model. the 2003 onwards ones are horrific as regards servicing costs (V-tec system) and the power delivery is too sporty to make them a viable sports tourer. Those underseat pipes don't help when adding luggage either.

Really... don't buy a VFR800i without at least test riding the alternatives first.

Really? I thought the idea of the Vtec was to increase bottom end torque, or do you mean the step up in power when it kicks in.

The V-tec is just a step up in power when the revs hit a certain range. The lobs switch over and open up the valves more.

My old Honda Accord Type-R had it kick in at 5,800. V-Tec is awesome!

Edit: 'Lobes'

I know how it works, I'm wondering why that stops them working as a tourer?

I think only problem Luckypants has with respect to touring is its drinking problem when you rag the **** off it.
