I do feel for the people who get fobbed off by the doctors, I'm being tested for a blood disorder at the mo and they kept saying I was fine. It's taken two years of visits for them to accept I have something amiss. CT scan coming up soon as marrow test came up normal, so at least it's not leukemia!

Tim,

Just come across this thread, welcome to this very very exclusive club.

MEMBERSHIP IS BY INVITE ONLY!!!!!

Go & have a look at www.diabetes.co.uk it is full of useful stuff.

There is also a forum on it, a bit like this one that has some very knowledgable members. There are pages devoted to type 1 & type 2 as well as general questions pages. I'm on there & found it helpful when I've posed questions when I got diagnosed.

However, remember that it's not a "one size fits all" condition/treatment. A lot of it is down to individual trial & error. You'll need to try different diet & exercise options to see what works for you.

Also, remember that a lot of the so called "healthy foods" are useless to us diabetics. A lot of the healthy eating brigade mmight say to have a glass of fresh orange juice, cereal or muesli and some fruit for breakfast BUT that is a lot of sugar to start the day with. They don't suggest orange juice to treat a hypo for nothing!!!!!

Make sure that you go and see a diabetologist and make sure that your GP surgery has a diabetes specialist nurse, if not see one at the hospital. I changed my doctors surgery when it became obvious that I new more about treating my diabetes than the so called specialist nurse they employed. I think basically one of the surgery nurses went on a 2 day course!!!!!

Push to go on a DESMOND/DAFNE course, I did the DAFNE, (dose adjustment for normal eating for type 1) & it helps me in my day to day control. Your employer is LEGALLY required to make reasonable adjustments to your working conditions as diabetes is covered by the DDA - disability discrimination act.

I hope this helps...........................

Thanks, I have already signed up for the forum.

Surgery nurse seems to be quite good as her husband has been type one for 41 years. she also recommended a DESMOND course and has attended as an observer. My practice does have a doctor that specialises in diabetes but his surgeries are booked up so much that my first available appointment is March.

I am currently trying to establish how I work by the meter. What shoves my readings up etc. Also now reading nutrition info on everything. Really cut back on the carbs. But, well meaning family buy me biscuits and cake say a little wont do you any harm without realising.

a) it is poison
b) I cannot have a little and leave an open pack in the cupboard.
