Just to throw a spanner in the works...

Have you considered travelling West before you hit the coast ?

For instance, past Reading the A4 is pretty good, and you can dive down one of the good A roads that head South, such as the 338, head towards Salisbury, then Blandford and on to Weymouth.

You could even arrange a get together with some of the South & West bunch...

Just an idea.
