It didn't work then, it doesn't work now. So much easier to blame everyone else.

to sum it up Ed bollox m8,

people no matter where they come on the social scale should know and be taught manners, and disipline, not blaming their bad, poor background for anything.

Yes the UK has got more affulent and there are still areas of poverty.

However i would like to point out that go back 40/50yrs to say when my dad was a kid.

He grew up in post war Britain, in Southampton (as did my mum but in shirly warren an other sh*t hole)and like most UK cities it was a mess. His area Milbrook was and still is a sh*t hole however he and 99% of the people he grew up with still knew that going around threating intimidating and causing crime was wrong. They were mischivious but not violent un like a lot of the youth today. Him and probably a lot of people parents etc came from similar poor backgrouds and turned out ok, knew right from wrong. And why because they had disipline and respect taught to them at school and home, they grew up in a time where caning, capital punishment and a clip round the ear from a PC was common place. If any proof is needed that the removal of things like this and the decline of th UK is needed i dont know what else is.
Its too easy for these worthless F8cks to say , oh but i came from a poor background and use that as an excuse. Well so did most of the Post War generation, and they from what i have seen are probably the best behaved generation who still respect others and belive in decent punishment and disipline. My parents never tried to blame anything or anyone for where they come from, they like decent people just decided to try (and succeded very well) and better themselves rather than become a to**er.

Who's repressed? These "people" choose to sit on their arses, nobody is locking them in and stopping them looking for work.

If the "hang em and flog em" policies didn't work, why didn't we have gangs of chavs in previous years?

Agreed, this argument against practices such as a "clip round the ear" from a copper supposes we have always had a problem with chavs and have always dealt (unsuccessfully) with them in the same way. This isn't the case, we didn't used to have the problem to the same extent we have now with criminal children even 10 years ago, let alone 30 or 40 years back.

What has changed? Well as well as large amounts of unemployment of working classes due to mechanisation and a loss of industry in UK (which is undeniably a contributing factor, although it doesn't excuse the behaviour), at least part of the problem is a general moral decline and a "softly softly" approach to law, both in terms of policing and enforcement.
