I spent some time between CBT and training/test riding about on a scooter (its all I had) to build up my road sense, and get in all those extresensory perceptions well all need to stay alive. If you can get some riding in on your own, you might feel more relaxed as it wont feel so new.

Just remember to keep up all your observations etc in between CBT and training!

Some people are fine doing it all at once, others prefer a bit more of a progressive approach. Which ever way you decide to do, do it becuase it suits you a relaxed rider is a safe rider, and a safe rider is a good rider

I'm not an overly confident person (unlike my other half Mr Rubberduckofdeath!) so I am prepared to be sensible and ride for 6months or so on a 125 if I find the CBT course tough. If though I feel ok I might do the DAS just so it's done, and I can still continue on my 125 until I feel confident enough to move up. I think this will be the best option for me, but i'll see how my CBT goes first! I might decide to stay a pillion! Haha!

TBH I doubt you will find it all that tough. But that isn't the point. In my opinion it needs to be much harder. Bearing in mind at 16 (or 17) you are allowing the rider out on their own on the road after passing some very basic techniques. If it were me the CBT would be so much harder if only to reduce those most at risk (young eejits on scooters and race rep 125's). The DAS isn't so hard either but I found it was the larger machine that threw me, I had no confidence in handling such a beast (GS500). Funny now I look back though. I really think gaining experience on a small bike and gradually working your way up is the best way to go. Of course when I did it I wanted to do DAS straight away but glad I didn't in the end.

I agree. There are a lot of inexperience drivers / riders out there who bring danger to the most cautious or experienced road user. I have been driving a car for 5 years and I know of the dangers, but being on a bike makes you much more vulnerable and I plan on learning as much as I possibly can so I don't put myself or other road users at risk.

If you're planning to learn as much as possible, I have a DSA book, Motorcycle Riding The Essential Skills 2001 Ed. that you can have.

Dunno why I bought it in the first place, I never read it properly and now it's just gathering dust. I'd rather someone else actually used it to learn, rather than it taking up my space. I can give it to Lee next time I see him.

Thanks Law that would be great! I told Lee last night that i'm taking learning to ride very seriously so I can be the best rider I can be for my own safety and the safety of others. I want to become a better road user all round and want to learn as much as I can.

Haha no! A lot of people should be though. I saw 2 bad accidents almost happen this morning, one where a motorcycle would have been involved. The roads are scary
