If God is what people see to be as a human resembling being sitting in the sky its not hard to see where the ridicule comes from. If on the the other hand it is viewed as a supernatural force that engulfs the whole universe and everything in it, and has no form/shape then I've got no better ideas, and nor does anything else we've discovered/found.

The universe, its existence and origin is simply mind boggling and I think humans will become extinct before having ever found the answers.

Evolution, it's the only sensible answer or theory. Try teaching it in schools in certain American states and you'll find yourself being kicked out of your job and prosecuted, but that's the lunatic bible belt for you.

But not in terms of the very start of the universe. A good quote I found on the big bang theory:

"Without any evidence associated with the earliest instant of the expansion, the Big Bang theory cannot and does not provide any explanation for such an initial condition; rather, it describes and explains the general evolution of the Universe since that instant".

So in essence we still don't know.
