Cost is a factor, but it's not the minority of young people in big cars that cause the problem on the road, that's just one problem.

The problem as I see it is inexperienced drivers pushing the limits of that limited experience, and people who should know better not paying due attention to the fact that they are in control of a dangerous machine. That goes for bikes and car drivers.

Staged licences for new drivers would help.... More focus on advanced training for car drivers would also help.... A big spike on the steering wheel would help....

The cost of insurance puts off the buying of top motahs surely?

And if they don't have insurance then not having a type of licence won't be a problem either.

Got some stats
SV650S...standard...box fresh

69.7bhp...44.8lb ft torque(more than a fazer 600)
A Fazer is making max torque at 10,000 revs and a SV at 7,000 revs
0-60 mph 4.15 seconds top speed 135 mph.

Another set of stats are

0-60mph 3.64 seconds top speed 125mph
0-100mph 9.53 seconds...(a GSX-R1000 does 5.38!!!)
68.5bhp and 43.81lb.ft torque.

What these stats prove is that the SV accelerates very hard for its average power. It has more torque than a 600 Fazer or 600 Hornet...650 Bandit? Nope The SV is producing more power in the bottom and mid range. Where most riders ride.

Open the throttle against these 3 bikes at 7,000 revs, the SV will pull ahead as it is producing more horse and torque. Until the bigger bike horse comes into play.

The Daddy of the budget class...the Z750. It makes more power and torque everywhere in the rev range...slaughters the SV in any drag race.

I had side by side drag away from some lights yesterday against a Honda CB600F and I creamed him. I was expecting a closer run. When I reached 70'ish on the motorway slip road I checked my mirrors and he was a good 20 feet behind. My SV has lifted the front wheel in second several times just accelerating in 2nd without dropping the clutch. I agree they are a quick bike, the engine is so flexible right through the rev range. From what i have read about IL4's I'll be sticking to twins for now.

I wouldn't mind a blast on a GSXR750 though, just to see what they are like. I also like the look of the Trimuph ST. Sat on one the other day, oh what comfort compared to the SV.

Yes, the SV accelerates hard for a 650cc V-twin. Torque and light weight see to this.

However, it is only as good as its rival budget machines.

The 0-60 time for the SV is good but the 0-100 time is rather ordinary.
The 0-120 would be much slower than a good 600 IL4. It should prove faster than a low powered IL4 such as the Bandit 650 and CBF600 in all speeds and rev range.

A Z750 will do 0-100mph in 7.80 seconds. Getting on for 2 seconds faster. It will also be accelerating harder at 100 than a SV too. A Fazer 600 is not that far behind either.

Below 80mph, the SV is competitive but above 80, the lack of horse means that the faster bikes will start to pull away.

Having said that, a SV is much faster than a GS500 or CBF500 and will have times closer to a superbike than a 500cc commuter twin.

Yeah,I've done a Porsche Carrerra 4, He bottled out and became a little spec in my mirrors!

The SV does take people by surprise,it's GREAT!!

There is 2 sides to the 'restriction issue';

1, Someone who's been restricted to a low power machine(Car/Bike)will come off their restriction, get a full/more powerful machine and could hurt themselves or someone else, due to giving their new machine a load of welly, and losing control and crashing.

2, Someone who has a powerful machine in the first place, learns to respect the power they have, and knows they have nothing to prove,so may ride/drive more carefully.

I'm not disagreeing or agreeing with the 'restriction issue',it's a difficult one as everyone is different,rides/drives different.

I myself had a TS185 ER at the age of 11,and used it off-road,so by the age of 16,when I got my RD50 MX,I was used to a more powerful machine, and so rang the 50's neck!

I was also allowed a ride of my Dads CBR1100XX,when he first got it,I was about 18-19,It was stupid-quick,and so got off shaking like a leaf!
But I respected it. And realised that powerful bikes don't need to be ridden flat out everywhere.

But that's me,and my opinion,I know everyone is different, and don't expect anybody/everybody to agree with me!

Beating a car is nothing to gloat about once you're on a bike over 125cc lol.
