to be honest, i had a little look over james bike on sat when i met him, and the rear tyre wasnt like that then, fair enough it was on its way out, but it wasnt cut, and it wasnt that square either.................

The Z6 roadtec in particular can go off pretty quickly. Yes, if you have a depth gauge, you can tell easily when a tyre's tread depth is illegal. Not everyone has one though. You can tell by experience too, but people new to bikes won't be able to.

There's also the consideration that being used on the road, and money not being in an ever-flowing supply (unfortunately ) many people will try & stretch out the most they can from a tyre.

I know with my tyres, the handling isn't really that badly affected when they wear down. But then, I also try & get the bike cranked over whenever possible. The difference when putting new rubber on is always very noticable though, but riding day in day out, you get used to it, and don't really feel it deterrorate over a period of time.

I do agree though, it does need to be constantly monitored.
