But really how much difference does it make? Do you use it hard? SV's can reliably do a lot of miles.

i average at around 20k miles a year, so i figure spending £400 fixing an engine that will be on 60k in a couple of years isn't as good an option as replacing it for £600 with a newer one.

i'm going off the advice here that the costs to repair my engine can climb up to the point where i'll wish i bought a newer one...

Yeah too right.

A new crank according to robinsons for a K3 is £529.33. Plus bearings, possibly rods, gaskets, LOTS of expensive labour. See the problem...

As already said, you can't, but SV engines are reliable no matter what the mileage. To break an engine takes a lot of idiot antics (well apart from the handful of early K3 crank issues).

Like the one I had, as YC stated earlier they are weak where they're cross drilled, I'll take his word for it as it lets me off the hook of being an idiot (where my wife's concerned at least as shes convinced I killed it).So with another k3 lump in the bike this thread is starting to convince me that I really need to rebuild my old engine with a stronger crank and big bore kit Incidentally after over 20,000mls the cylinder bores look like new still.

Yup the bores seem pretty well lubed.

Early K3's also had rod issues. The curvy crank breaks on the starter gear drilling too.

There's a pic on here somewhere of a guy saying "oil leak" when there's a hole punched in the front of the case!

So has the cause of the breakdown been found yet?
