Default Re: Do you need proper bike gear for a 50cc?

Funny isnt it. I'll cycle at 30mph or more sometime in a pair of cycling shorts and a cycling top. which have zero gravel rash protection, but I wont ride my GSXR across town at 30mph without my leathers on... even I think I have double standards !!!!

DD & Kitkat, can you not offer her this as a compromise.

You buy her dragin jeans, she rides all year round, she gets wet if it rains and she doesnt moan at you about it. Or if she doesnt want to ride in the rain she pays to get the bus instead. If she decides she needs textiles later on, she pays for them ? I dont know what her money / job situation is like so I dont know if that would work though.

I dont know your daughter, but at 16 I thought I knew everything and my parents were wrong all the time. It took a few hard lessons before I realised that I didnt and my mum and dad were actually giving me good advice, perhaps getitng cold and wet on her scotter in the winter is a lesson she needs to learn for herself ?

I thought that this piece of advice was a bit harsh. No-one in their right mind would want to drag someone so precious to them along the road to prove a point on gravel rash

However this is much more constructive advice

God knows what speed I do on my mountain bike over the jagged rocks of the peak district, can't be much slower than some of armoured the DHers . And yet, being an XCer, I'm only in lycra too!

Kitkats daughter is wanting to get a 50cc bike in January when she turns 16 to get to college etc etc but she's not wanting to wear full gear ie textile jacket and trousers. Quite happy to wear proper boots and gloves will wear a jacket without persuation but doesn't want to wear textile trousers as she thinks everyone at college with think she's a muppet for wearing them instead of normal jeans or draggin jeans.

What does the org think?
My daughter goes to college on her 125 and has done the "I'm not wearing ...." until she got wet!!!!!!!!
Now she puts waterproofs over jeans and stays dry much more comfort for a day at college

Teenagers dont think logically or with any sense its the "I'll make my own mistakes" and they do with a "I told you so!!!!" from those of us who know better

Very good advice.

When I was on my 50cc bike last year, wore textile jacket, lid, gloves (would have worn boots if the the sidestand didn't stick out too far ) and my old motocross pants with amour under them.
After getting absolutely soaked twice, I would always have waterproofs under the seat.
Until she's experienced getting very wet and cold, I don't think you'll be able to change her mind (sorry if I'm making false assumptions)

PS: It really ****s me off when people make sweeping generalisations about 16/17 year olds. I'd honestly say that I was a safer rider last year (at 16 Vic ) than a lot of car drivers.

Her nose should be to the grindstone at college. Not on the way to college.
