Every night of being limited to 20mph (with no traffic), empty motorways limited to 50 (or 40) and pretty soon you'd be f*cked off with the system too.

Had a prime case today, enter motorway, limit is set to '50' with hard shoulder running turned off, zero reason why could not do 70 (or 120 if so inclined). Outside lane was empty. Further on the HS running was turned on and the limit went back up to 60, again no reason not to do 70 apart from the cameras.

A while ago I saw a program looking at a pile up on the M42, the sanctimonious police officer was going on about people ignoring the 'slow' signs, thats because 99 times out of a 100 they are bullsh*t, unfortunately that 1 time they really are real and need to be listened too but as with the boy who cried wolf a number of people will have tuned them out and ignore them. I see lots of traffic jams caused by the wombles, "WARNING OBSTRUCTION", "WARNING LANE CLOSED", 40mph etc etc, big traffic jam. What do you find when you get there? A womble parked behind someone IN A LAYBY!

How ever did we cope when we had to stop on the hard shoulder without a womble to close the motorway for us?

Yep, it's got to be pretty annoying if you use it all the time when the motorway is empty and it's still switched on. I don't know how you prevent the misuse, and my fear is that they will just be more and more abused as they become more widespread. Shame 'cos I've worked with the same principal technology for years and the theory if left alone does work. Will we ever pass a law or policy that says we find a happy medium and don't feck with it? I doubt it.

You don't need laws or policy you need common sense.

Simply put something into the control software that says if it is not reconfirmed as needed every 20 minutes it reverts back to proper motorway rules.

That may help, in that it can't be overridden to read a particular speed, and stay that way past 8pm, when all the traffic is long gone. But my bet is that it didn't need fecked with in the first place. It probably just needed the tolerances & sensitivity set correctly (assuming they can be configured) and alone left to do it's job.
