Default Fuels warning light - SV1000

On my old SV650 (Curvy) the fuel light used to start flashing to say "get some fuel soon" then stay on solid to say "get some fuel NOW". My SV1000 fuel light comes on solid. So I thought to myself. What a good idea, they've swapped over the wiring so it is initially on solid then flashes when it gets more urgent.

So this week, the light came on after about 100 miles which is quite normal. I carried on to see when it would start to flash. After 135 miles cough...cough...splutter...pop...cough....hurumph. Managed to push it to a petrol station where I met a bloke who had just done exactly the same thing on his ZZR but had also managed to flood it when he restarted it so he was not in a good mood.

Question is....

Should a SV1000 (2003) have a 2 stage fuel warning light or is it just a single stage one? And if it should be 2 stage, should it flash then solid or solid then flash?

Anyone know of a sensible way of carrying a couple of extra litres of fuel on a bike?

Cheers,
Mark

PS, SV1000's are pretty heavy on long uphills.

at least you had a light....a while back my fuel light failed on my yellow bike, which resulted in me not knowing I'd run out of petrol and had to push the biatch home on a dark winters night. I now check my petrol before i go anywhere and make sure i reset my odeometer to keep an eye......don't want that happening again!!!

Jerrycan + pillion seat + bungies.

Alternatively, drink a few pints of fuel a day, if you run out, pi$$ in the tank.

Nope
Light comes on, it's time to fill up. The next hint is when it all goes quiet

Oh and I've never got more than 14.2 litres into my tank from empty either, so ignore what the manual says about 17 litres . . .

Got 15.5 litres in it. Can probably get a bit more in if you level the bike while filling. It was certainly VERY empty as I'd even done the wiggling the bike thing to get any spare stuff from the corners into the pump to reduce the overall pushing effort.

How much did Suzuki save by not having either a fuel gague or a two stage fuel light? Certainly worth an extra tenner on the price of a bike. Could have saved the money by getting rid of the hazard light switch as hazards are mostly worthless on a bike anyway.

Seen a maximum of 16 litres put in an SV1000 tank, not sure if my mate was empty but the light had been on for a long time!
