Default Engine Idle Speed

Hi.

I have a 2002 SV650S and I think the idle speed is a little low. The bike sounds more 'comfortable' if I hold the throttle open, just a little. It also sounds better!

Having said that, may be the idle speed is correct but just doesn't sound it to my ears. If I need to adjust the idle, is it an easy job?

Any advice would be great, guys & gals.

Thanx.

J

Make sure engine is at normal temperature, reach through left side frame gap and turn the knob, clockwise to increase, anti-clock to decrease speed. Sometimes easier if you gently blip throttle while doing it to unload the adjuster. Best thing is that you can't really do anything wrong, just turn it up or down and it can always be put back where it was, so don't worry about it.
2 things to be aware of.

1 - the adjuster could be stiff or sticky, don't over-force the knob . It works via a length of flexible drive cable so it does have some "springiness", but take it easy. Ideally lift the tank and airbox and make sure the adjuster is turning properly, clean+lube as necessary.

2 - chokes can stick on curveys, this will also upset the idle speed. Ideally check the chokes are free (cables oiled and plungers free in carbs).

I've got mine at 1100rpm, why do you have it so high?

Actually, yours is low! IIRC the idle on a pointy should be 1400rpm +/- 100rpm
