Is there a way to legally drive home without tax or MOT?

For example, picking up a van that doesnt have MOT or tax and taking it home and keeping it SORN. Is it possible? Can you get a one day insurance without tax or MOT?

not without trade plates I dont think so no. It really needs to be taxed and MOTd. You can drive it to or from a pre-arranged MOT appointment for an MOT but it would need to be taxed and insured.

Or on a trailer/flatbed of course.

book it in with a mot center near where you live you, can legal drive an un mot'd and untaxed van to get a mot'd then when it fails or "the appontment was cancelled" (friendly mot man needed) then you may take it home but insurance is a must have

Yes, but you must have a pre-arranged appointment, and PC Traffic will check up if he suspects something dodgy - which it will appear to be, since the vehicle will still be registered to a different person, with insurance recently taken out in your mum's name (assumption based on other thread).

IIRC, you're supposed to only drive the vehicle to the nearest MOT station to your address (which you'll have to prove), via the most direct route.

There is a precedent which allows you to stop off along the way, however. The case was Secretary of State for Transport V. Richards ( 1998 ) JP 682. Richards stopped off twice on the way to an MOT test, first to buy petrol and then stopping again to buy cigarettes, and was convicted by magistrates, the judgment was appealed before the Crown Court and was overturned. The prosecution then appealed to the QBD and the Crown Court verdict was upheld.

Would you really want to drive a vehicle with no MOT? It's probably got no MOT for a reason.

Even so, you may still be prosecuted for driving an unroadworthy vehicle if it doesn’t comply with various regulations affecting its construction and use. Your car insurance may also be invalid. And depending on how far you're going to your 'MOT', ie London to Edinburgh, the Police may smell a rat somewhere!

Not worth it IMO, why not just get a van with an MOT? Or get the seller to get one before you buy.
