Default Is your speedo reading '0'?

hi folks,
just thought we all might benifit from what i discovered only a few days ago on my k3 sv650. As you might expect from all the speedo sender unit it is abused from all weathers and tempretues, however, this MAY not be the cause of it failing and giving u a reading of '0' on the colcks, random readings or even dancing readings when stood still Hmmm.

If the 3 pin plug is bone dry inside, then the problem/design fault lies elsewere i.e on the fork leg itself were the cable is keped in place by two flat bits of metal. This is the problem that i found. they pinch the wire just a bit too much to the point that the 3 wires inside get damaged ans you get no reading.

...... solution......

add a small VERY thin washer to lift the two bites of metal so that it just bearly touches the cable and tadaaa the speedo works as it was designed to. a much cheeper option than getting a new unit only foe it to fail again sometime down the road.

hope someone finds this usefull and cost efective as i know i did lol.

Or at least turn it off when you're not using it! Madman.

I thought mine was down to a faulty Reg/Rec so I bought a K5 one off eBay , it did not cure my problem . It did stop my lights fluttering on tickover though . My bike would read 186 MPH when the ignition was switched on and give me random readings all over the shop , I just eased the bolt now as you mentioned and turned the ignition on ....... no random readings . We shall see if it is cured in the morning . I have suspected something like this as it gets worse at speed suggesting something is occurring under extreme flappage .

If that wire is clamped so hard then there is damage to it and you should cut out that damaged part and resolder and insulate it. If the live is shorted against the earth then it could blow your signal fuse or damage the clocks.

If it has not blown fuse already then it will probably be fine, but that's the safe course of action.

Well the clocks should show 888 when you turn the ignition on , the left digit shows what looks more like a backwards 6 , clocks may have lost that part of the LCD display . I will investigate at the weekend , It won`t affect the reading given as technically it would only display a 1 on that side if I ever did those sort of speeds officer .

I do know as when I am doing 70 on the local A road it says I am doing 189 mph and getting over 175 miles before reserve kicks in and that I am covering .1 of a mile every 10 yards at walking speed

I'm pretty sure I read a thread ages ago about this. All pointy clocks show the backwards 6 as standard and isn't a error. It's just how it was designed I think.

I've also had this random number generator or no speed showing. Went for about 2 months doing it on and off, kept giving the cable a wiggle and I think it's fixed. It's not done it for ages and hope that it doesn't. It's not fun going past speed cameras with a indicated speed of 100+mph.
