Default Wee electrics question

I know the headlights are 12V 55W, and the sidelight/position light is 12V 5W. If I'm fitting auxiliary lights, do I need to match the watt ratings? (ie, what happens if I fit a 55W lamp in the sidelight circuit?)

This might seem a slightly odd question, but it does make sense in the greater scheme of things that y'all don't know about

you would probably melt the side light front plastic with the heat from it

Ah, no, I'm not just wedging it in the sidelight space.

It would most likely overload the circuit, the easiest way to do it would be to use the supply to the present light to fire a relay, and use a seperate supply direct from the battery, I wouldn't add the extra light load to any of the wiring on the bike, it would very likely push the load over the limit the system can reliably give.

power(watts) x voltage = current(amps)

I know that I was really wondering what would actually happen... A strong smell of burning was my number one suspect to be honest.

OK, another related question, does anyone know of a simple splitter block I could use for my battery? by the time I'm done here I'll have the veypour supply, the new lights, and the new horn all coming off the hot terminal, as well as the main ignition... It's all getting a bit untidy can't find anything appropriate so far, there's a car one available from halfords but it's humungous.

you sure about that. Been a while but ..

Voltage(V) x Current(I)= Watts(W) OR IxIxR = W where r is resistance in ohms

Therefore I = W/V

Cheers
Ben

Northy

I'd probably go to a breakers and find a suitable motorcycle fuse board, an SV one would be ideal, then I'd attach the - suitably sized - supply cable to the battery terminal on the solenoid, and put the fuse block under the right side panel, this way there's less wiring to disturb when attending to the battery, the unfused cable lenghts would be few, (one), and short, the fuses would match the ones already on the bike, cutting down on the spares it would be desirable to carry, and each circuit could be suitably protected in a neat manner.

Squiddy is the man in this thread alright. If you want decent wiring gear then I use:

http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.co.uk

Don't use the cheapo line tap things, they slice the wire's insulation and aren't suitable for anything other than low currents.
