Default Suspension pre load

I have never bothered playing with my pre load and am feeling it is well time I actually sorted it out.

I have done a search and cannot find the advice that I am sure is on here, so can you help me out.

I am one of the bigger riders on the site 17 stone and all I can find out is wind it up to the max. Can someone explain the benefits/pit falls of doing this etc...?

I have a K2 650, and the settings remain as they were in the factory.

So what is your advice.

As a wrough guide, the forks should compress about 35mm from completely extended, to when you're sitting upright on the bike. You might wish to invest in firmer springs, however.

Me too, I played about with my rear preload and made the handling crap, I went the opposite way and it nearly tossed me off (which is always a bonus)

I have wound in the front preload a couple of rings and it is fine for me now.

Do a search on preload and sag, as I am sure some of the clever people on here have tried to explain it many times

I have to be honest, the best advice I ever got for setting up basic adjustable suspension was "Play with it till it feels right"

Mine is set for 32 mm of compression.

It was the recommendation of Elmerfud when I had Ohlins springs installed. Having gone from stock non adjustable to firmer springs and a setup that appears to work far better than what was there previously, I have not yet been tempted to fiddle.

Duuuuuuude, Hows tricks? You been away a looooong time. Anyway, enough of this over the fence chatter. Now, when i was a portly fellow, well more than i am now, i used to ride with it one click from the top. This is found to be ok once used to it. However, changing the links to shorter verions and changing the rear shock for a lower milage OEM one made a hell of a difference. You could run the preload on about 3-4. If your rear shock has done anything over 16k, then it is probably past its best and could do with a replacement. Either an upgrade, or just a lower mileage example.
